Thursday Night Throwdown

With House of Comedy in it's new location, JE Ent will continue bringing you Soul Sessions, and I'm thinking being on Washington the crowd may pick up for them. With a $5 cover you can get some reggae, neo soul, comedy, spoken word and maybe some praise dancers. OK maybe not the praise dancers but I do know they have a wide variety of entertainment so check out this low key event. New location of House of Comedy on Washington and 20th (just next door to The City).

The Rams will be playing the Chiefs on Thursday (and yes you can still get tickets). And we know Liquid Assets loves to put a theme behind Red Hott Thursdays so go get you some of the KC vs STL edition hosted by "Randy McMichael and all his teammates." OK groupies you know what this means, money will be in the building so wear your tightest low cut dress and see if you can become a baby mama before Christmas.

My first stop will be at Groove Theory so I can help those men of FreeTime say goodbye to their successful Thursday Night event at EXO. They've been doing it for a while but all good things must come to an end. Don't think that this is the end of Free Time, they are working hard on the their next event already. Think New Jack City in St. Louis, you know how they do it.

STL SUPPORT

While listening to Staci Static Thursday on Hot 104.1 I heard Arvin Mitchell talk about a benefit that would be at the House of Comedy on Sunday for his sister who was killed in a car accident. In case you can't make that event please just make sure you keep the family of Ebony Minnis-Mitchell in your prayers. The family is also in need of contributions that can be made to any Bank of America. Please visit this site that was set up in her memory. While nobody should ever die for others to learn a lesson, I'm hoping that we can all learn something about this because the driver that hit her car ran a red light. So the next time you think you can make it or think you are in such in a hurry that you can't stop, think about the life lost of Ebony Minnis-Mitchell and stop.

FRIDAY NIGHT FAB

It's Friday and you are either happy you just got paid, happy you still got a job, or just happy that you haven't contracted the swine flu, so that sounds like you need to celebrate. Get out and  enjoy some of the great events St. Louis has to offer and don't be a STL hater whining about "it's never nothing to do in this town" cause we are giving you 4 great ways to spend your Friday night.

The weather is warming up and there is no better place to hang out than the U. City Loop. With ladies free until 11, I'm suggesting that you go grab a bite to eat at Pi and then head west up Delmar to see what DJ Charlie Chan has cooking on the 1's and 2's. It's on the corner just north of Delmar on Eastgate and in case you riding the short bus the address is 609. I wish I had more info to give you but I haven't been to 609 in a month of Sundays (really a year of Sundays) but it seems like Robert Kirk is still holding down a good crowd.

The folks at SoulStylz may think we have forgotten about them since they haven't been featured on the site in a while but we were just giving our readers a well needed rest so they would be refreshed to attend the Beautiful event at Sleek (inside of Lumiere). Since this event series was announced a few weeks ago there have been nothing but positive reports from the all the Beautiful people that support this SoulStylz event. I'm going to throw my new BareMinerals makeup on, spray some oil sheen on the crown and get all Beautiful so I can join the cool kids club.

There is a part of me that every time I see this flyer for LUSH I want to bust out the rap that Mocha does on her commercial...then I remember I can't rap so I just say it quietly to myself while I lay my clothes out on my bed that I plan to wear when I hang out with Mocha Latte & Boogie D. Everybody is FREE until 11 but if you didn't get on that V.I.P. list that they were offering via Facebook then you better get there early cause they start packing it in early.  Oh yeah and our girl  Tamariane will be celebrating her 30th Birthday there tomorrow night so you already know suiteSTL will be in the house helping Ms. Tamarine party like the little ball of sunshine she is.

Nothing makes me want to go out more than a good comedy show and a party. St. Louis House of Comedy is giving you both cause this weekend marks the 1st Anniversary of Dee Lee's comedy club. They've brought some big names and we were there during many of those events and no matter who they bring to town I still enjoy seeing the local comedians on stage doing they thing. I'm sure the locals will be there but I am excited about seeing the hilarious Tony Roberts who will be there through Sunday. Big ups to Dee Lee on his 1st year and we hope that this is just the beginning of many more years to come. I wonder since Steve "not at all funny in the morning" Harvey got moved off of The Beat after replacing Dee Lee do the folks over at 100.3 feel like complete fools for  shutting down the Dee Lee morning show. They better be glad HOT 104.1 put Rickey Smiley on mornings, otherwise I would be ready to protest demanding that they bring that light skinned comic back to radio. OK sorry I didn't mean to go off on a rant, damn this was suppose to be a Happy Anniversary post for them. Oh well get your tickets and support Dee Lee so he will continue giving us laughs down on the landing.

tonight: SOUL STAGE

If you love a good open mic and are looking for something new then make sure you check out Soul Stage. It goes down at STL House of Comedy every Wednesday. The cover is just $6. Wait did they say $6 - that is really odd, why not just make it $5 but whatever. Local poets Appey The Truth and Xplicit will serve as host and DJ 76kid will be on the 1's and 2's.

SOLD OUT: Rickey Smiley

According to STL House of Comedy owner Dee Lee, Rickey Smiley was the fastest selling show ever at his comedy club in St. Louis. That means the HOT 104.1's morning show host sold out faster than D.L. Hughley when he was in town. It's no secret that every Friday I can be found at Dee Lee's House of Comedy catching the 8:30 show but I haven't seen a crowd like this since the Election watch party. Dee Lee opened up at his own club making sure he got the crowd ready for the national headliner. I know most people in St. Louis still remember Dee Lee as a Radio personality but he is even a better comic. Another comedian Ced (who I've never heard of) showed up and out as he almost made me fall out of my chair a couple of times during his show.

When Rickey Smiley hit the stage his greeting alone made a sister laugh. You know he wasn't going to do comedy without a addressing the Pimp comedian Katt Williams. He said he was going to hold him down and put his hair in ponytails and barrettes. LOL. Now you know Katt Williams don't play about his hair but he had to address that fool calling veteran comics Steve Harvey and Cedric the Entertainer "has beens". He loves him some purple and gold so he had to acknowledge all the fraternities and sororities in the house even the 1 lonely Iota. Then he started shouting out the Crips, Bloods, Vic Lords and McDonald's workers who seemed to represent as well. He tried to do a little set with a keyboard but since it wasn't hooked up to his liking he scrapped that and ended the show with an old school set which was accompanied by him dancing his skinny self around the stage. Overall I must say that the show was one of the best I've seen at the House of Comedy.

If you haven't checked this club out you better get your game up and get tickets to the next show which is set to feature Esau McGraw. But no need to wait until the weekend because P-Dub (you know him as Pretty Willie) will be there on Wednesday for the Urban Suite.

Ready for a Laugh

Your favorite cross dressing church announcement making old lady comedian is coming to town this weekend. You know him as the host of HOT 104.1's morning show....RICKEY SMILEY. He will be doing his thing all weekend long at Dee Lee's House of Comedy. Make sure you get your tickets TODAY because this extra skinny brother is sure to sell out.

Comedy King in St. Louis

D.L. Hughley  backstage at Dee Lee's House of Comedy
One of the orginal Kings of Comedy, D.L. Hughley is in town for a series of shows at Dee Lee's STL House of Comedy. I checked out the 8:30 Friday show with Matt Collins, Dee Lee, and Malik who all took the stage before Hughley. I was at the Pageant during D.L. Hughley's last stop in St. Louis and with not half the seats filled and and minimal laughter I was a little nervous about how he was going to keep us laughing on the landing.

Newcomer Matt Collins took the stage first with what seemed to be mixed reviews. I'm not sure if the folks were still cold from the night weathers or what, but I felt like only half the crowd got into him or maybe they were just a little stuck up to really relax and enjoy his style of comedy.

Dee Lee took the stage at his on comedy club in front of a sold out crowd. He is not just the owner folks, Dee Lee can hold his own on the stage like the seasoned pro he is. I guess that's why he will be taping his HBO special at the club on New Years Eve. If you enjoyed him when he was host of his own morning show on 100.3 Beat (before they replaced him with the non-funny Steve Harvey) then you will enjoy him even more on stage. If you won't be able to go to D.C. for the inauguration then don't worry because when Dee Lee does Barack Obama it's a night to remember.

Malik is not just a brother with swagger and a smile ladies, he can make you laugh too. He started out his show by telling the church ladies and preachers to get ready for some cursing and if they had a problem they didn't have no business in there anyway. Well he used some other words when he said it but I won't go there. This Miami native was funny as hell and reminded me of why I loved comedy shows so much. He was raunchy, funny and thought quick on his feet. He almost made me drop my camera from laughing so hard when he told one audience member that with all the leather he had on he was looking like the inside of a Lexus. If you get a chance to get to the show, make sure you buy this brothers DVD.

When D.L. Hughley took the stage I wasn't sure who I was going to get. Would it be the King of Comedy we all know and love or would he be in CNN mode with a more serious version of his comedic style. I was pleased that we got a little of both. He made it a point to talk about the basement like feel, which I hadn't noticed before, but it does remind you of a my aunt's basement in North St. Louis with all that stone and no windows...LOL. Overall I would have to say that D.L. Hughley performed like the King of Comedy that he is. He will be in St. Louis with 2 shows on Saturday night and his finale at Dee Lee's House of Comedy will be Sunday night with a 7pm performance. For more information or to purchase your tickets check out STL House of Comedy  and go support this top rated club because yo won't be disappointed.
